new netbook

Just a quick post from my tiny new computer that has pretty much nothing on it yet. There will be some acclimation pains (the keys are set up just so, and not exactly "staggered" enough from one another--not to mention are tinier, and arranged just differently enough that I have to pause to make sure I'm correctly hitting the shift key), but I'm ( Read more... )

Now that Lindsey's gone, I am without a wireless router. And frankly, I miss it far less than I thought I would. I've moved my laptop out of my bedroom and it is now sitting on my dining room table. And my dining room chairs aren't nearly as comfortable as my bed, so I'm hoping this will keep me off the computer a bit more. War and Peace isn't going to read itself this summer!

But I suppose you actually use your laptop for work things, so you're allowed to crave the convenience wireless. :P

A wireless router's cheap - Newegg has the 802.11g routers for $30, and even Best Buy offers them for about $40. The 802.11n models are maybe $20-$30 more if raging speed is a priority.

Make sure WPA encryption is turned on and that you use a hard-to-guess password - there are so many people in your complex who come within range of it who can hop on it and do nefarious things that encryption is a must.

Oh jeez. Just thinking about those keyboards makes my wrists twitch, and the idea of you novelling on that thing or using it as a primary computer hurts my soul! Check into USB keyboard, portable and not. Which one did you get? I would have gone msi wind, but the wifi phone supplants my need for a netbook. Alas, my desktop is increaingly frail and senile, and I'm trying to prepare myself to buy a new computer this year. Pity a graphics card nearly doubles the price!
