best and worst couples on tv in recent history

My usual VD e-card website hasn't even been updated for 2010, that's how exciting the holiday is this year. Oh well. In honor of everyone's favorite unimaginative, consumerist-oriented and entirely arbitrary, manipulative, and shallow interpretation of romance day, I've decided to try something new, and present you with... the worst and best ( ( Read more... )

Christ, I STILL haven't watched last week's Chuck because I suspected Shaw and romantic stupidity...plus I was playing a video game and forgot. But holy crap, SHAW SUCKS. He shows up on screen and I think of more fun things, like getting cavities filled.

I liked Spike when he was an evil vampire, like, seasons 2 and 3, but after that...no. I kind of hated all of Buffy's relationships on that show. At least her relationships were more or less allowed to END without a lot of hemming and hawing and getting back together throughout the show.

Goes without saying I'm all the way with you on everything involving Veronica Mars. So I said it. I need more caffeine and to rocket launcher my neighbor's TV/stereo.

I almost put "Buffy and anyone" as one of the worst couples, except I didn't hate Riley with the fire of a thousand suns. Maybe only, like, twelve.

As for Chuck, yeah. This season would be top-notch if they didn't have to go there with Shaw. I actually didn't mind him for the first couple episodes he was on - he has been a good catalyst for Chuck's development as a spy instead of an asset. But if you're going to set up his backstory that his wife was a spy and that he's against workplace relationships now (presumably because of then), then, don't turn around two episodes later and have him seducing another spy. Dammit! I am totally okay with Chuck and Sarah not being together, but if they aren't, then they should NOT be with people who suck. (Hannah is okay. But I also know how many episodes she's signed on for. So, WTF, show.)

Ha! Buffy alone makes anyone a bad couple. But like you, I didn't totally hate Riley, just a little and right at the end more than anything. He was pretty whiny at the end, I think. Then again, Buffy was ALWAYS a whiny bitch no matter what, so whatever.

Zoe and Wash - I concur with your results, good sir.

my friends who are caught up on this season say "word" to your discussion of Sarah/Shaw.

And Riley! I liked him when he was a nice, normal guy. I even liked him when he was a nice, normal guy except for the part where he was an undercover soldier. And then he started sleeping with Buffy.

le. sigh.

I was about to protest Jim and Pam. But then I realized that I liked pre-couple sexual tension Jim and Pam. Couple Jim and Pam not so much. And their baby better come out looking like a shark. Because it has been jumped.

Yesssss for Andy and April! :D I loved her dumping her gay boyfriend this week.

And for Zoe and Wash! I loved that the tough as nails girl was with the nerdy guy. And the lack of drama! Mal/Inara and Kaylee/Simon provided more than enough couple-y drama for one show.

Yeah, Jim and Pam were great when they were our Everyman and Everywoman, the only two people in a sea of caricatures and assholes. But then they succumbed to the caricaturization and assholery. Sigh.

I don't know what it is about Parks and Rec this year, but when I am not laughing, I am all warm and fuzzy. Definitely one of my favorite shows this year. I LOVED Andy's band at the seniors party this week. He is naive and sweet without being oblivious or infuriating. And while I love bitter cynical dry April, I also love that she is falling for him in spite of herself.

I also thought the bit about Justin being a tourist was incredibly wise. And so much more brilliant because it came from Ron of all people.

I wasn't sure about Parks and Rec last season, but they've done just the right tweaking to make every character lovable.

I think I'm going to have to go rewatch it now... Even though John Laroquette's appearance weirded me out a little bit, Mouse Rat is worth it.

I forget, have you watched all of How I Met Your Mother?

And, yeah, Jim and Pam, pre-season 4 is my favorite TV couple, obviously. I hate them so, so much now, as you know.

Yeah, I'm current on HIMYM. I'm not thrilled with this season - it seems to have stalled all character development altogether and reduced everyone to cartoons - but I'm not entirely fed up yet. There are still amusing parts to each episode.

I read about The Office reset, but until I read that Jim and Pam have stopped being smug, I still don't care.
