All the breath went out of Charlene's body in an instant and as soon as she got it back, she was laughing. A hard, bringing tears to the eyes sort of laugh. It was nice. She couldn't remember the last time she'd felt this odd sort of joy. She couldn't even put her finger on why. Perhaps it was the image of herself in her head, being so tidily dealt with when she thought of herself as such a badass. Part of it may have been the way he looked down at her, like he was trying to figure her out. It had been a long time since anyone had cared to. It was a heady feeling. "Really? No way," she replied, trying to get a handle on herself, wiping at her eyes. "Shit. I always thought I could take Bobby because he was a big fat girl. Now I know it's true. Skinny little chicken-legged asshat that he was ( ... )

The laughter coming from Charlene was mildly surprising, but it was the words spilling out of her mouth that made Spock widen his eyes slightly. It wasn't that he was offended by them, he was just simply surprised. McCoy grumbled a lot and Spock heard curses used regularly on board and elsewhere, but he wasn't even quite sure what it was Charlene was saying. He wasn't even going to consider the fact that there seemed to be tears mixed with the laughing ( ... )

The way Spock widened his eyes slightly at her made Charlene want to laugh more, wondering exactly how foolish she looked. She was glad she'd learned to laugh at herself at a young age, or else she'd probably be holed up in her room right now, wishing for death. As it was, Charlene bit down lightly on her slowly healing lip, the light pain tamping down the giggles ( ... )

Spock decided not to go into the fact that any combat situations she ran into in space might lead more to living or dying, not who looked worse in the end. One never knew what one would encounter, after all. She wouldn't likely be a usual member of any away teams, but in Starfleet they trained to be ready for any occasion.

"My being half Vulcan has nothing to do with your physical aptitude." he said, not trying to chastise, even if it sounded like he was. "An opponents strengths are not an excuse for your own weakness." Even as he said it he was watching and waiting for the attack.

It was a smart move on her part, going low first. Spock had to shift his leg and bend his knee to avoid the major brunt of the kick, and as he corrected for that the next kick caught him on the side, knocking a small huff of air out. His immediate reaction was to hook her lower leg with his arm, lifting it and using his grip to thrust her backwards. For the time being he was sticking strictly to defense.

Charlene shook her head at Spock's words, grinning slightly. "Yeah, yeah, all my sucking is completely on me. Got it." God, when he said stuff like the he was almost like her Daddy. In a good way, not in a creepy one. Telling her things she rightfully knew, but needed to be reminded of anyway. 'Gotta bust down that ego a bit before it eats your head', Daddy always used to say.

She felt a good solid feeling of success when her roundhouse landed, smiling tightly until he grabbed her leg and thrust her back. Charlene struggled to stay on her feet and surprisingly managed it, despite tripping over her own ankle enough for it to twist a little painfully. "Damn it," she muttered, rolling it lightly. But she didn't muse on the pain for long, diving right back into it, raising her slightly injured leg to kick at his side again and then the other to kick around to try and dig her heel into the back of his knee and bring him down.
