I know I've said this before, but sometimes you jsut don't realize how inspiring the things you do really are til you write them down. I was struggling to find a topic for my teach for america essay (uhhhh its all due friday, whoops.) and then I thought of writing about getting the job at summer camp, and how I had to pass my lifeguarding test and ( Read more... )

1. i think sometimes we give ourselves too much credit (not aimed at you or anyone, just in general)
2. if you try to be selfless to make yourself feel better, does that really count
3. lost is amazing

1. True.
2. I was never a regular "Friends" watcher, but I remember there was one fantasic episode where Pheobe tries to commit a good deed that doesn't make her feel good. At one point she goes to a park and lets a a bee sting her so that the bee will feel all macho and cool and get respect from it's bee friends. Then Joey tells her that the bee probably died.
3. Jackie is amazing. Ref: your comment in the bucknell community's last post.

1) i think you're right.
2) i would call that selfish. that's been a big part about what i've been thinking about too, and I kinda come down to the idea that maybe a way to be selfless is to do something because it's the right thing to do. then of course you can't be sure of your motivations unless it's something that's going to not make you feel good but still be the right thing... very kantian. but yeah, it's difficult.
3) of course!

2. or MAYBE it doesnt matter if we are sure of our motivation or if we even question it at all.
and maybe theres no such thing as selflessness, but that doesnt mean we cant also care about other people and be nice and stuff.
that way is not difficult.

1)as you told ME the other day, even if you can't attain something, you should still try (if it's important to you). So, even if you feel you can never truly be completely selfless, you can strive to be. (just like me realizing i will never be like Jesus...)
2)I'm STRUGGLING so much to write my essay and letter of intent for TFA--i woke up early to work on it this morning and ending up taking pictures of laura's shadows and looking at our throats in the mirror...and i never do that normally! whenever i know something is really urgent to do but i don't want to do it, i come up with every excuse possible. i wouldn't be surprised if i vaccuumed my whole gateway and cooked a big dinner tonight...oh distractions! do i really want to do TFA anyway?! ah!

I kinda hate to debate. That being said, I agree with what you and Jackie and Meagan all say to an extent-- no one is completely selfless. Especially by nature. If we're doing good things, those things are good despite our motives. True.

However, while each good act is good despite its motive, what about sheer number of good acts? Can't people do more good the less selfish their motives are? What if you've done enough good that day and so you don't go out of your way to help someone that needs help? The world is a pretty screwed up place, and maybe we need to do good til it's hurting us, or at least good til it's not comfortable anymore, to fix it?
