USF: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

May 31, 2007 17:20

Normally I don't post on current events in entertainment media unless it directly affects me. However I've just received the following notification from Universal Studios, and felt it worth a post if only to document my excitement.

HARRY POTTER TO CAST SPELL ON
UNIVERSAL ORLANDO RESORT

My first question, too. I visit that park every March during baseball spring training, and I'd hate to think any of the current islands are going to be replaced.

....well, maybe Toon Lagoon.

(BTW, static_eddie, I still need to call you about lunch. Never followed up on Frolicon.)

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

We so have to roadtrip. I will dress up like an even more inappropriately old Hufflepuff.

You could get away with being a recent graduate... in fact, aren't you a recent graduate?
I mean, my school tassles are faded and the little tin number is oxidizing...but your tassles should still be rather fresh.

By the time my family has the time and funding to go (I don't think it opens until after Z is already back in school), the kid will be able to share the driving load... *shudder*

You have a child?! Did I know that?

That aside, it could be a good thing to have support on the drive, as well as a kid who meets the height requirements for the rides.

Speaking of road trippin, we're planning a Universal excursion for late October, in order to catch Halloween Horror Nights. One of the few things I've missed about the FLatlands is working through Halloween in the parks... they really know how to put on a show. Tickets aren't too expensive now... but if you want to go, let us know, and I'll get you all the details.

(plus, the last week in October is Orlando's Puppet er, thingie, hosted by Heather HENSON, Jim's daughter.)

I saw the guy from Universal on the Today show---they replayed it on Countdown tonight---and he kept going on and on about how "authentic" this place was going to be. I mean, he just kept using that word "authentic." And I am sitting on my bed, watching him, and saying aloud, "You are talking about a theme park based on a fictional series of books. How in the hell can you say it is authentic?" It's fauxthentic, is what it is.

Awwww I'd hug you if you were in arms reach... don't get your brain too twisted around the concepts and doublespeak... It's taken me years to sort and smirk at all the corporate, theme resort lingo and beliefs.
That's the "magic" of living in the FLatlands... and precisely why I want to write fiction based on the facts I found while I was down there.
One concern is the serious LACK of authentic UK weather...I mean, all the pics of Hogsmead have it looking like a winter wonderland (as we see it in one of the movies)... believe me, I wouldn't put it past USF to install freezers and snow blowers much like Disney does every December in their planned community, Celebration, to make it feel more like winter/xmas.

It's a very distorted mirror down there... and fascinating.

I noticed that too; my very first thought was, in Florida? Really? Couldn't they find some space in UK? Or, I dunno, Maine? (I know, UK is far too expensive, and in the end, everyone goes to FL anyway... reality matters when it's a business decision)

Speaking of seriously distorted thinking linked to Harry Potter: Laura Mallory. The money quote for me?
"Personally, I don't think it's a good idea to raise a whole generation of witches," Mallory said. "I don't think it's good for our country."

As if. More to the point: if only...

*wishing for effective spells since 19xx*

Oh yeah, Miss Mallory? 'Cause the last two generations of X-tian Evangelicals have really done a bang-up job. Like all the graduates from Pat Robertson's law school currently ensconced in the Justice Dep't. Frankly, I think we could do with some damn witches!
