The Yoyo Gallery opening last weekend went smoothly.
Scrambling to produce three works of art did not go smoothly. In fact I freaked out.
If it hadn't been for The Lady's loving support, and a dose of blind perseverance I wouldn't have made it. However, in the end, I was able to provide two finished pieces which I'm resolutely proud of.
The first day was spent reworking two unfinished sculptures which had been collecting dust in a camera case for nearly 6 years. I finally accepted that they couldn't possibly be finished in time for the event.
There was no Plan B, but a sale on frames at Michael's craft store inspired me. We picked up a few frames, and pulled pair of unfinished sketches from my old portfolio;
Baby Jane
and Corporal Corpse
Although that Baby Jane pic looks like dark pencil, the original was a very faint sketch which I beefed up in Photoshop. She was originally started as a T-shirt design for "Toy Hell" a spook house at Universal Studios, Halloween Horror Nights 96'. She's much darker now and complimented by a black, ovate frame.
The portrait of Corp Corpse, guarding the graveyard gate, has been yellowing in my folder since the early 90's. It started as a fan gift for Tim Burton, but after a press release that he had signed a contract to make A Nightmare Before Christmas, I just didn't have the motivation to finish it.
Now Corp. Corpse is finished, and stands proudly in the company of two newer characters, the very grim
Mr. Rites and 'Lefty' the dwarf criminal.
I was still nervous about how well these illustrations would be received by my friends, contemporary artists and General Public. However, Mr. Thom Foolery erased any concerns when I arrived at the gallery. With a genuine "oh my god," Thom emphatically told me that I could charge between $300 and $1000 for either piece. He went on to say that he'd buy Baby Jane himself if he wasn't in a tight spot currently (I tagged her at $300 and might offer Thom a deal after the show).
The show itself was a crowded, sweatbox mix of friends, familiar faces and hipsters floating in to quickly browse the hangings or to refill their PBR. The Yoyo Gallery has no AC, so the interior was stagnant and humid, thus most of the patrons coagulated on the sidewalk outside in a cloud of cigarette smoke. The Lady and I were joined by
ladykinbote,
vidicon, K80,
filmzombie74 and Ms. Stine, an old friend of mine from Athens.
By some turn of irony, all the RadAx artists (with the exception of
sketchington) were hung on the wall opposite of mine. Thom's work was most likely my favorite though (maybe he'd consider a trade?).
Thanks to everybody who came out and supported us! The Lady will be posted pictures as soon as she gets the time to edit them.
In other art related news, I'm still working on the Gnome animation for Terminus Media... so, unfortunately, it won't be seen at Hero Con...
GREAT GIFT IDEAS

I'm approaching my life lap...
Five days from now, as Spring 07' lays dying, I'll be 3 years shy of 40.

You think 28 is ponderous? I'm filled with ponderings and doubts about my future, my worth, my impact, my values and valuables and all that... but sweating 'all that' usually means I'm doing even less to improve it.
I've concluded that it's time I get some culture in me... and I don't mean Yogurt (although that would be nice too).
That being said, I need to see this opera:
Monkey, Journey to the West
omg
"Gorillaz designer Jamie Hewlett and 2-D's very own voice coach Damon Albarn have teamed up on the amazing opera Monkey: Journey to the West. Monkey will be taking place as part of the Manchester International Festival from 28 June to 7 July and over the next week we'll be releasing some behind the scenes goodies for you to check out, so stay tuned to the fan site. Fans of Gorillaz' music and artistic details will be sure to love Monkey as well.
Tickets are still available for the Manchester shows, and you can order them by clicking here:
MONKEY!"
Simple request: I would like tickets to an opera in Manchester, England (as well as plane tickets to Manchester, England).
pharminatrix introduced me to the novel Journey to the West (aka The Adventures of Monkey) a Chinese classic about a picaresque monkey who gains godlike powers. She also gave me the word picaresque.
Think Brer Rabbit meets X-men.
Think Immortal Monkey with a Dobbsian dose of Slack to back him.
I love the creatures who live by their wits, the monkeys, foxes and rabbits.
...and I love Jamie Hewlett.
