Did it ever occur to anyone that Ruby is acting the way that she is because it's the best way to get Sam to do what she wants? I mean, she tried one approach last year, the mean, unsympathetic, snarky one and how far did it get her? Caught in a Devil's Trap and then sent back to hell. Ruby's on a mission here. Clearly, because throughout ( Read more... )

This post is kind of awesome! I love the idea of Ruby just mimicking the Dean/Sam relationship, both with the "we have something important to do!" and also "You are special, Sammy!" Only in her version he's special because he has his powers so he should use them, where as for Dean he is special and therefore must not use his powers, if that makes sense.

Awesome analysis of Sam's expectations of people there!

Thanks! And thanks for overlooking the awesome, awesome liberties I'm now realizing I took with grammar here. And yeah, Dean's done so much to protect Sam and keep him special that way that Sam's going to the dark side voluntarily now would feel like a huge betrayal (especially because of that whole 40 years in hell thing). Mostly I just kind of love the idea of Ruby manipulating Sam in the last way he'd expect because demons aren't supposed to understand vulnerability as a kind of power. And also I kind of love Sam's huge flaw here because it's so Sam to just kind of expect everyone to have his best interest at heart despite everything he's seen.

I so very rarely entirely agree with you on anything Ruby-related, but actually ALL of this makes sense. I'm still not sure I understand Ruby or "like" her (it's in quotes because I can like someone for finding them interesting as well), but this definitely helped me see her in a different light. :D

awesome! I'm glad you liked the meta. Ruby's a hard one to crack and I could be totally and completely wrong here but I think it's just hard for me to believe that Ruby would go as soft as people are claiming but at the same time, I find someone really wrong with anyone saying she has to go "evil" to be interesting. I think the most interesting thing they could do with Ruby is have her make the most human call of all and have her betray someone she does care for because she's scared or because she just gets a better offer. And I think Sam won't truly appreciate all he has in Dean until everything Dean ever gave him has been taken away and that's what Ruby's in the position to do.

Yeah, no, I can't see Ruby's just 'going soft' because she spends what amounts to about a second for her in hell (considering how long she was in hell before she showed up). There's definitely something to it and it would just be the perfect manipulation and so SPN. Sam brought down by his own hubris - it's kind of been in the works for a while.

HAHA! Yay, I'm glad we finally agree even if it means that like 6 billion people just fell into the sea. Out of curiosity, does this make you hate her more or like her? 'Cause I LOVE manipulativebutnotevil!Ruby, she just is so humanin the way that SPN likes to make people human (basically, by bringing out their weaknesses). I mean I really don't think it was 'goodness' that allowed Ruby to adjust to hell so easily and come out with any autonomy, I think it's kind of the opposite. She didn't have to make as many adjustments as Dean did because she's just - not a self-sacrificing or particularly strong person in that sense. After all, she never had an issue with having to do bad things in hell, it was Alastair that had her panicked; with Dean it was the opposite, he could deal with his own actions, not those done against him.

I don't know. I loved her last year but I have a mental block on liking her this year based on 2 main points ( ... )

1) No, I'll give you, Genevieve is nowhere near as good as Katie was when it comes to the snark. You really need someone who can enunciate well to do that and Genevieve kind of can't because of that lisp so, yeah, even I (her eternal defender) cringe every time she tries to make a snappy comment. But i do think she's doing the soft-n-vulnerable thing better than Katie would have, probably because her features are so much softer and even when Katie tried to be vulnerable last year, I didn't really buy it all that much ( ... )

You and me both, since I feel like I could be totally on the wrong track here, but I do like this track.

it's a theory that would explain why ruby's less sassy than last season.

true that. And why they hired Genevieve instead of an actress who could pull off sassy.
