Give her some credit

First of, it is no Harry Potter and the Heir of Malfoy, but I think I can maybe live with the title, seeing as it is one letter off from HPDM. :)

Also, it gave me an excuse to check the OED. That dictionary is awesome. I looked up the word 'slut' once, actually, way back when that debate was still raging and there were like ten or fifteen ( Read more... )

Preach it, baby.

This is kinda how I felt in terms of my Pratchett vs. Whedon entry:

Rincewind, who so many had gushed to me about, pissed me the fuck off. I found him whiny and annoying. I don't even remember his companion's name, but he annoyed me too. Equal Rites, Small Gods, and Night Watch were all much FUNNIER (I confess Color of Magic had a few good lines but didn't exactly leave me rolling in the aisles) and had some brilliantly insightful lines, but if you're going to tell me a story you need to make me feel for the characters, love them, think about them, make me actively interested in not watching them die horrible brutal deaths involving tupperware and screwdrivers.

And Pratchett just...doesn't.

He makes me laugh, yes, and wit to me is a HUGE appeal. But when it comes to his characters - despite their originality - frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn. While Pratchett is clearly much funnier than JKR, probably a more skilled writer in terms of basic style, and more original in terms of character creation, he does ( ... )

Because of my Draco-bias, I'm inclined to say that he's not necessarily a funnier writer, just a funnier person. But that's just me.

Um... darling, not to be a bitch or anything, but comparing Joss Whedon to Terry Pratchett is like comparing Stan Lee to Shakespeare. I'm not saying Pratchett is Shakespeare, but he's written 30+ books and you've read 4 of them. They change. They are dynamic, and you started some at the beginning and then skipped to the middle. The characters grow and change. It's like reading Philosopher's Stone and then skipping to Order of the Phoenix. Anyway, what I'm saying is that Shakespeare is a Poet and a playwright. He is amazing and good at the genre he wrote. Stan Lee is also amazing and good at the genre he writes. They are not comparable because they're not where near each other on the writing tree. Comic books and Plays do not compare. It's the same with Comic books and regular fantasy. Terry Pratchett is great at what he does, he's creative and intelligent and funny. Joss Whedon is great at what he does, he's also creative and intelligent and funny, but they don't compare. They're in completely different spheres from each other ( ... )

IAWTC - but at the same time I do have sympathy for Pratchett in this whole debacle. The journalist was itching to cause a fight, and he was trying to be as diplomatic as possible.

Oh yeah, totally. They keep setting Pratchett up that way; I think the same thing happened when he made the comment about JKR's not thinking her books were fiction (which, btw, made me laugh because his comment was such a Pratchett thing to say). Which is funny because one of the times I heard him speak, he talked about 'running into' JKR (is it possible to run into JKR?) and having this funny little conversation with her. It sounds like they're not best friends or anything, but they're polite enough when they do come across each other.

i read his first book and it didn't grab me at all. i'm going to give him another go before i make my final descision on his writing.

and i agree. Jo's books have done so much more and affected more people than his, it's not that his books are bad, they're just different

Yeah, they both have very different strengths as writers, which is why there's no point in comparison, really. But this has kinda been a topic going around on my flist, soooo I thought I'd comment...
