An essay that takes itself far too seriously (as per the usual. ^^)

Wow, there are so many disclaimers on this thing it's uncanny. If two is uncanny. Anyway, I just wanted to mention that I most likely was not the first person to look at the interview this way and I'm not trying to claim I was. It's just a personal example I happen to have.

Why taking JKR at her word is a bad idea. )

You know, at times it's not even not taking her at face value but the opposite. Because as a Draco fan my experience was often that her words would be interpreted for her to be something that they weren't ( ... )

Sorry, I replied in the wrong place. Again. Just a warning that you don't have to read my tl;dr, it was meant as a comment to the post.

Yeah,I guess that's true, people do tend to twist interviews to mean something they don't. It's just that, with the IoD, anyway, I've seen people throw a quote from JKR in and say, 'voila! my point is proven' without actually then explaining the quote or even thinking more about what it might mean. I guess this essay is more about the interpreting that goes in the opposite direction of what you've sited, because I think that, given the quote, thinking Draco is just evil is still the more obvious way to go, even if it's twisted ( ... )

I don't think Stephen wanted to talk about the evil of the baddies, but about what a cool character Draco is: Seems irredeemably bad, but unlike Crabbe and Goyle he's kinda fascinating. - That's what I got ( ... )

This is probably true, he did kind of harp on Draco. An article recently came out in a 'legit' paper about how many people were taken with Snape and I was like...where's the Draco love?

But you're totally right, all she ever does in interviews is explain the last books, though, I think that with some of the questions she gets asked, it becomes harder. And she has 'revealed' Ron/Hermione. Repeatedly. Which is why the lack of her confirming H/G sticks out so much. I think that, either in terms of plot or relationship, you can figure out certain things based on what she avoids, because she sometimes does avoid talking much about topics that you'd think she could go on and on about. It's tricky, but I think that you can honestly read the entire IoD and come out of it with a completely different interpretation than your run-of-the-mill H/G fan.

But yeah,it's all about looking. And it infuriates me when people suggest that there is nothing to look for.

Heh, I think Fry just likes pimping Malfoy, he did it again when he appeared in the TV adaptation of 'Tom Brown'.

Good essay. I'm with you, I think JKR is definitely putting a lot of thought into what she doesn't answer, what she does answer, and how she answers it. Interesting how, for the most part, there's not much discussion (that I've seen) about times where we know for a fact that she's misled us.
