I'm assuming last night was the Chinese New Year. Starting at midnight, there was the sound of firecrackers for about five minutes straight from some uncertain distance to the West and possibly North. I'm guessing they were in the International District. I'm also guessing that because there were no police sirens, this was in fact a planned event

I think the Chinese celebrate it more as a cultural thing, since pretty much everyone knows that the current Gregorian calendar is the most accurate.
I think also that the Chinese calendar was kept around because traditionally, farmers and fishermen were more inclined to plan their harvests based on the lunar calculations.
