Owning a Bar/Club

Julian's post about the "mystery nightclub for sale" has me wondering: What does it take to own/run a bar/nighclub? Is it a good investment? Is there a specific type of bar/nightclub that is absent from town, and that Seattleites would attend ( Read more... )

Not really sure. I just remember an article talking about speakeasys and mentioned the real one that got shut down and the few that are now opened up that aren't really speakeasys but themed lounge type places.

I don't see that any of the three in Seattle have Live Music. That's really the key for me. I want something out of Dark City, but without all the bald pasty guys moving the buildings around when people sleep.

I would happily frequent any bar you owned, given that it was within ambling distance to me - but the thing is, restaurants/bars/clubs are a notorious fiscal albatross. they are a black hole of money.

I've been reading jwz's blog about running the DNA lounge nightclub in SF for years, and while it's fascinating reading, lets just say that it doesn't seem like the kind of thing one wants to actually do unless you're already independently wealthy via some other means.

I totally recommend reading through the archives of his blog though, it goes from the purchase of the business through extensive renovations and then multiple years of actually running the place, and as far as I can tell it's never actually made any money...
