mathematics doesn't lie

My commute to and from work involves walking to Central Square, taking the Red Line from Central to Park St, then transferring to the Green Line (D) and taking that to Newton Highlands, and then walking from there to the office (about 0.8 miles). The whole thing can take anywhere from 55 to 90 minutes depending on how slow the trains move and how ( Read more... )

You should move in with me! I've got a spare room you could live in... However, the commute might be a liiiiittle bit worse than it is now. I don't know. Check how far Oamishirasato, Chiba is from work...

haha :)

I've meant to visit Japan again since the last time I went. Time and money, unfortunately, are the constraints here :(

FWIW, my commute is longer than that. Not much longer, but longer.

Of course, almost all my commute is on the train (70 minutes of about 90 minutes, if you include the walking), and so I get a lot of uninterrupted reading time and podcast-listening time. This is no mean thing when you've got small kids.

And I can buy a beer right before my evening commute. That makes it much more enjoyable. Hope they never get rid of the bar carts at Grand Central.

You might see if Vanu would be a good place for you - the people I know who are there all seem to be pretty happy with it. I've also heard good things about working for ITA.

Thanks for the suggestions! I know at least one person who's worked at Vanu before so I can follow up.

ITA is probably out of the question; I have a non-compete clause (either 6 months or 18 months?) in my contract and I technically work for Expedia...

Are non-competes enforcable in MA?

Would you be willing to move to CA? (I'm sensing no)

Are you doing anything on the trains, or just busy wait? I enjoy my long train commute (but no transfers), because it gives me time to read/play DS.

I have a passing interest in AI and its applications, but probably not enough to make it a full time thing, so your company (I have to admit I've heard your stories but I don't even know who you work for) is probably not the right fit.

Robotics might be interesting. I've seen Vecna's ads on the train quite often and wasn't even aware they did anything involving robotics... it definitely seemed like they were into medical technology and software. I'll add them to my list, thanks!

Come to Cali and join the horde of Nooglers. :3 If you live in SF, you get rides to and from work on an intertubes-enabled bus. I hear it's swank.
