The most amazing thing about this I guess is that this was written 6 or so years ago, and the processes he is talking about have not changed whatsoever.
The major record labels always strike me as being dinosaurs that are aware of their [possible] impending fate, but are unwilling to change their methods to do anything about it.
[And here is a first - the first product of the Bad Religion camp that I have enjoyed. hehe]
It's certainly interesting to think that when you look at overcompensated fads (like emo at the moment perhaps?) that the singers can be put in one of two groups - singers with high lyrics who grunt, or just singers who grunt and get their guitarists to sing.
If musicians didn't get signed (no offence, ha!) they wouldn't get ego's and therefore telling them they sound like another band wouldn't be such a harsh comment and wouldn't be dismissed as much. The problem is: all the labels want a slice of the pie. Greed.

I don't agree with that at all. It's not always going to be a signing that gives members an ego, some are terrible right from the point that they first step out on stage, believe me.
To true, Some band members ive come accross in the last 10 yrs of running/playing/helping out at gigs are so far up there own ass its untrue. While Confidence and self Belief in your playing is a good thing, some people take it to far. Ego trip/rockstar tantrums from bands who are meant to be playing just for fun (or so theyed have you beleave during their 9-5 working ours) really piss me off. One band over here after their 1st gig posted on their website slagging all the other bands here off saying that none of us could write for shit. which was pretty arogant after a half hour set with 2 or 3 orginal songs and the rest covers played at best average. way to go Ego boys, your bound to get a second gig after slagging all the other bands round you off.
Hmmm, there is a lot of truth there, and I agree that a whole lot of music that is being made today can fit into a few "molds" that are "in" today

I think that is utter rubbish! Well it was certinaly meant to provoke opinion.
I think what he means by presented is not so much given to you, but presented by the artist on that CD/record ie that music is how they have chosen to present their thoughts/ideas etc in that form. I don't think it has anything to do with how you get it whether that be by shop or friend.
This of course implies that an 'extinct' band no longer has any influence over the gene pool of new music which is quite clearly untrue.A good point brought up by both you and Sunna [Hydra] which for some part I certainly agree with as some bands do take influence from musical acts from the past. However, I think his statement is true of a lot of todays acts because no matter what they state their influences are, they are only pushing their music to sound the same as what is currently around them, not what has come in the past. Whilst the following is a one-sided view, I find that almost every Hardcore band sounds almost exactly the same - there is nothing new going on
