With my first car, a 1981 Chevette, it was sudden inspiration. I named him after Professor Donald Knuth, the computer science pioneer, because he was old, slow, and none too attractive, but would get the job done eventually if he didn't die along the way. That sentence requires a half dozen footnotes, but was funny enough to computer science undergrads.
The second car, a 1992 Nissan NX (what was elsewhen known as a Pulsar - a low-end sporty coupe), was a continuation of the theme. I figured it was probably going to be the most needlessly fast (or at least fast-looking) car I ever owned, so it was named Seymour, after Seymour Cray, father of the supercomputer
