If one has boiled hot dogs, and forgets to turn the stove off before sitting down to eat, there will be no olfactory warning until the hot dog broth has reduced to a disgusting state.

This also applies to hard-boiled eggs, if one forgets the eggs are boiling and wanders away.

I at least ate the hot dogs before things got gross.

I probably COULD have eaten the exploded charcoal-like remains of the eggs in question if I had really wanted to, but I thought better of it.
