Ben,
I find the example of Cash and Bono exillerating and encouraging. As a believing Catholic Christian who drinks, swears (on occasion), and engages in politics and issues that some Christians blanch at - I am at one with these people.

I think one of the greatest sins of the modern protestent church is the sin of seperating the Gospel of Jesus Christ from the social ramifications of the Gospel. It's not an either or question. It's a yes question. But in the American church political structure, you're called a liberal, a hippy, or (God forbid!) a papist if you care about the widows and the poor
( ... )
It is true we are no longer under the law, but the bible says "let those who are Christ depart from sin" and "if you walk in the Spirit you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh" and "beware of false prophets" "by their fruits you shall know them" "the fruit of the spirit is love, peace, joy, temperance, longsuffering" "examine youselves to see whether you are in the faith." I understand where you are coming from, I am a big Cash fan myself, and I can see what you're getting at. But according to the verses above, I see zero reason to believe either one was a Christian. Cash in his latter years maybe, but Bono? How about some real hero's of the faith, like spurgeon?
