It's possible to be both smart and a fan

May 12, 2006 09:04

So I've decided what bothers me most about so many posts on TWoP is the idea that I can't be both smart and be a fan of a show that has some flaws. I like to think of myself as intelligent. If it were my mission to prove that intelligence, I could write and write and write about what's wrong with VM. It surely had plenty of flaws (in BOTH ( Read more... )

Oh wow, so much "Amen" I can't even begin to express it. I'm so sick of people using tv shredding as a means of proving their intelligence. I have no desire to sit down and prove how smart I am by breaking down minute details on a tv show. I just want to love it. I love to hash out details and discuss plotting and clues and what got us from A to B. But that's it. That's all I want to do. I don't want to talk about jumping the shark or choppy filming or phoning in performances or whatever. I love it. I love it like I love JJ Redick. JJ can have a bad game, but when he's on he's on fire like nobody else. That's what I love him and that's why I love my show. When it has it's rough patches it is still better than 90% of tv and when it is on its game....nothing can touch it or even come close.

If loving VM and loving JJ is wrong, then I don't want to be right. ;)

I had some issues with the VM finale but I don't expect that other people are going to necessarily agree with me. It has nothing to do with intelligence, because people just are going to react differently to things. Reasonable, intelligent people can disagree.

But I get what you are saying. I have an irrational love for VM too, flaws and all, and there are some people who are so relentlessly negative that I just choose to avoid reading their comments after a while because it does begin to lessen my enjoyment of the show.

I have a visceral emotional reaction to Veronica and to Logan, and all the plotholes in the world aren't going to change that.

But I'm not going to rip it apart, because, well, I'm just not because that would suck the joy out of something I love. Why would I want to do that?

Seriously, thank you! I couldn't agree more with you. I read some comments posted in the episode thread and they depressed me. WTF? I like to think of myself as intelligent as well, and yes I'm in love with L/V and I actually loved "Not pictured", does this make me stupid? I don't think so. I'm well aware that it's TWoP, but I just can't stand criticism based on a stupid a priori blah blah blah sophomore slumps blah blah the show sucks blah blah I won't watch it anymore. And you know ultimately these comments make me angry! People have been working their asses off to save the show, because they love it in spite of (?) its flaws and these comments a la "this show sucks"or "no wonder the show has poor ratings" are very disrespectful.

[steps off her soapbox]

ok, sorry I didn't mean to go all Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde on you. I guess I'm just scared. I just want a season 3! argh!

Thank you for writing this. You're right, it's a serious trend at TWoP, and I hate it. "Who can be the most critical of our favorite show?" isn't a competition I want to enter.

I just want to go along for the ride and then talk about the ride with the other riders because that's the whole reason I came to the damn park in the first place!

If you want me to prepare a critical analysis with a focus on the holes and flaws that exist in the show, call me at work. I charge $100 an hour. Otherwise, let me love (discuss, analyze, whatever) my show without connecting my intelligence to my lack of desire to tear it down.

I get it, and I hate to be that guy, but the site is Television WITHOUT Pity. It says right there in the name that the posters might just be hypercritical.

I'm not sure where it starts to become an issue of intelligence, because I really do not see it that way (and I don't read the episode threads), but I don't think that just because you prefer to focus on the good stuff and let the other things slide means you are dumb in anyone's eyes. And if it does, should their opinion matter anyway?

You're not THAT guy. I'm actually really glad you posted this because it give me a chance to clarify. My ranting state before stopped me from just saying what I mean ( ... )
