A call to arms for american live journal users. I want YOU. Especially if you know a thing or two about US Colleges/Unis. I'm thinking of doing exchange for a semester over in the states and wish to know stuff about some unis and their programs, people who go there etc.

Testicles

That is all.

Yay. Ok, cost isn't that much of an issue (unless accommodation is really expensive) because my uni covers all tuition fees and we just pay about AU$3,000 for the semester and we only need to pay this back after we start earning over 30k/year :) I love Australian education systems.

I am looking for a good education school, with some partying being a bonus, however I would still like to have some weekends where I can study and get good marks. I will also be studying Marketing, Political Science and Psych
In terms of the people who attend: less rednecks, less conservatives, less jocks. More emo girls with tongue rings. More punkers. etc.
I can choose from the following colleges:
Boston Uni
Case Western Reserve
Cornell
Emory Uni Goizuetta Business School
Pennsylvania
George Washington
University of Arizona
Uni of California
Uni of Illanois Urbana Champaign
Uni of North Carolina
Texas at Austin
Washington Seattle.

of that list I'd recommend Boston U, and University of Seatlle. They're both pretty decent liberal arts schools that aren't overwhelming. Seattle and Boston are also nice cities where there's stuff to do. Which University of California?... because there are like 6. Cornell is a great school, but very difficult. I've heard mixed reviews of Austin; some recommend it, but others say the stereotypes about rednecks are very true to life. U of Arizona has pretty low academic ratings, but is considered an amazing party school. However there's nothing to do in Arizona at all. I can tell you that because I live there. The other schools I don't know enough about to really give a positive or negative review. So there's my 2 cents. Ask away if you have any questions. I hope I helped.

Yes I'm considering Boston now. Heard good things. I heard boston has a high crime rate, have I been misinformed?

as far as i know, that's true, but it's just like any other big city. i've never actually been, but i'm going there to look at BU and a few other schools in a little over a week. i could give you a more informed opinion then if you like.

that would be bliss :) thanks heaps. Oh and take note of the crowd. I've heard it may also be very posh upper class pretentious :(

BU seemed like a pretty nice school. there are around 15,000 undergrads but it doesn't feel overwhelming. there's a pretty decent liberal arts program and i was generally impressed. boston seemed like a great city, full of nice old brownstone buildings. certain areas were pretty posh, but great portions of the city where pretty college friendly. i guess one out of every six bostonians is a college student, because there are so many colleges in the area. the public transportation - the T - was amazingly clean and easy to naviagate. on the downside: the dorms are in the little old brownstones and are quite old, not very nice. also, that get heaps of snow in the winter - i don't know if it snows where you live. good luck.

Ok, so this coming to the US is becoming a reality. I'm apparently achieving enough to get a scholarship from my uni here in Sydney. It'll only be about $4,000 max but I'm sure I could find a way to come up with the rest. Especially because social security will be paying me AU$160/week whilst overseas so living there shouldn't be too tough ( ... )

Yes, it gets VERY cold in Pennsylvania and Illinois (don't pronounce the S).

Ohio and Illinois are not considered "redneck" at all.

BU is a good arts school but not that great for marketing and such.

You seem awfully worried about crime rates, but I can assure that unless you skip through the bad parts of a large city (read: New York, Chicago, Boston, LA, etc) late at night, you're not really going to encounter much crime. It happens, sure, but it's not like it's on every street corner in the middle of the afternoon either. You just have to know which places to avoid at which times, and be street-smart. No uttering slurs, no making stupid comments. Common sense stuff.
