Ah, I know the feeling exactly! Except instead of the Secret Garden (which, btw, I would absolutley LOVE to see onstage, amateur production or not) it was, of all things, the Nutcracker..and the joy and wonder was on the face of my little boy.
Life is a lot better, as of about two days ago (funny how long-standing life stresses can sometimes resolve quite quickly ...) which is very nice.
Sounds like you had a very similar experience. The Secret Garden production was trule lovely. On re-reading my post I realise that it wasn't the amateur nature of the production that was so wonderful (it was in fact fairly professional, all considered), but that it was a school production: what we call "middle school" - perhaps what you would call Junior High? Years 7 and 8, 11-13 year olds. This added to the innocence of the production and made it extra special! :)
