Lester shut the office door and leaned against it. Becker cradled his bandaged wrist. Smoke clung to his hair and clothes. They had been lucky that the damage was limited to an incinerated warehouse and a few cuts.
“You phoned that in,” said Lester with brutal honesty. He eyed Becker. “You can’t help anyone if you’re dead. We need you here one hundred per cent or not at all. Understood?”
Becker met Lester’s gaze and tried to convey some sort of apology for past failures. The apology that Lester would never ask of him and that Becker would never voice.
