The picture made Emily shudder. It encapsulated the image of trapped domesticity that she had fought so hard to escape. But Matt was looking at the magazine with a kind of longing.
“Have you ever celebrated Christmas?” Emily asked carefully.
“Not really,” he answered with fake nonchalance, “there wasn’t much to celebrate in the future.”
“I could do Christmas for you…if you like. Turkey and mince pies and presents round the tree.”
He took her hands and kissed each palm. “You could. But I wouldn’t want that. It’s not what you’d want. We’ll do something different. Start our own traditions.”
