“You’re hurt.” Connor managed to make the words sound like a question, a statement, and an accusation at the same time.
Abby fingered the bruise on her neck. Behind Connor she could see Caroline smothering a laugh. “Not really,” she said, hoping he would drop it. “It was just, you know, one of those heat of passion things.”
From the expression on Connor’s face he did not know at all. He looked lost. Abby felt a surge of protectiveness.
“I would never hurt someone I loved,” he protested.
She blinked away unexpected tears. “Those are the ones we hurt most.”
