A/N: Jess and Lester have never been through an anomaly
I
Becker was unusually talkative and Jess was unusually quiet. They were both thinking about the anomaly that had opened earlier allowing a sabre-toothed tiger free reign.
“Do you ever imagine what’s on the other side?” asked Becker.
Jess turned in his arms so she could look into his eyes. “Every single time. Would you take me with you if I asked?”
“Yes.” he replied, holding her gaze.
She could see his reluctance and how much the promise cost. She remembered silent screams, torn bodies and stolen lives. Each death was stamped on her memory. They deserved better.
“I’ll never ask.”
II
The anomaly was small and located in thick forest. It seemed innocuous.
Lester made a decision.
“Right, Jess, you manage things here and I’ll go with Connor and Matt.”
Connor looked horrified. “What? No! James, you can’t, I won’t let you. We need you in charge at the ARC.”
Lester raised his eyebrows and employed a voice he saved for ministerial meetings. “Is there a problem, Mr Temple?”
“No,” said Connor, uncharacteristically subdued. Then he brightened. “I’ll just nip to the loo and meet you here.”
He ran off.
By the time Lester worked it out the team had gone.
