Becker felt sick. Inside the enclosure fashionable ladies compared dresses and patterns and unfurled parasols against the sun. Outside, beggars crowded the pathways their hands outstretched for coins to buy food. Or drink. Many wore the remnants of military uniform.
“You’re troubled,” said Connor, resting a hand against Becker’s arm.
Becker forced a smile. This should be a day of pleasure. “It’s nothing. A momentary fit of blue-devils.”
“Liar!” Connor moved away. “You think I don’t notice those people? There’s starvation all over the country and corn prices kept over-high.”
“You’re a radical?” Becker was shocked.
“I prefer free trader.”
