It wasn’t professional but occasionally Nick would pass over the more extreme examples of his students’ essays with comments.
“Was I ever that clueless?” asked Stephen, wincing.
“Never,” replied Nick torn between amusement and exasperation. “It makes you weep for humanity. I honestly think that a team of monkeys with typewriters would manage better.”
That was before the future predators.
Stephen recalled the conversation with sudden, bittersweet clarity and grinned at Nick through the glass separating them. He had no doubt that Nick would hear and remember. “No matter how long we give them I doubt they’ll ever produce Hamlet.”
