Connor had been washing under the yard pump when Lester’s coach arrived. He dressed quickly and ran back to the room, pausing as Lester’s voice carried clearly though the partially opened door:
“The Tories value respectability above all and you ask me to believe you’d willingly throw your political ambitions for someone who has no family, no money, known radical sympathies and tainted virtue. I think not. But this is about Connor. It’s his future at stake. Do you love him?”
Connor felt himself crumbling. Becker had said many lovely things but he’d never mentioned love. He turned and ran.
