A flash of black and white caught Lester’s attention. He looked up and saw Connor staring through the panes at a single magpie. Clearly the boy was brooding again.
Abby had noticed the same thing. “Honestly, Connor, you need to pull yourself together. A lone magpie is nothing special. It’s a bird, not some kind of harbinger of doom.”
“I know that,” said Connor, flushing.
Lester came over to the window. “She’s right. It’s just superstition.” Connor nodded but his face remained clouded. Lester sighed and gave in. “Look over to your left. There’s a second bird on the tree.”
