Tea was fish and chips. Connor leaned over his plate and breathed in the oily heat of chip-shop batter. Perhaps he should wait until they’d eaten?
He’d both imagined this moment and hoped that it would never happen. Only now Auntie Beth, who wasn’t a real auntie but a neighbour, had seen him with Jack. She was bound to talk.
Mam was worried. “What’s wrong, Connor? You look like you’ve lost a shilling and found sixpence. Whatever it is, it can’t be that bad that you can’t tell your mother.”
“It is.”
“Never!”
So he told her. And it was.
