Recover #2

I broke my arm three weeks ago, and never did get a proper cast. I am healing well. Doctor Katz told me I no longer needed the removable half-cast he provided two weeks ago. Jessica and her sister Crystal had insisted on signing the half-cast any way. Their penmanship was mostly hidden beneath bandages, yet I smiled each time I unwrapped myself.

Nurse Karmen (Doctor Katz’s pretty and probably married PA) suggested rubbing oil of vitamin "E" on my deep violet scars where Doc had installed steel plates in me.

I already have full pronation, and my supination, while not yet full, is exceeding expectations apparently. It seems likely I will regain full rotation. My arm flexes well, though I’ve lost mass.

I’m not yet cleared to lift anything heavier than a soup can with my right hand, but I can return to the gym. I explained cardio caused my arm to throb. Doc said that was normal. I can take the pain; I just didn’t want to cause my recovery delay. I will be working cardio again this week.

My next appointment is Tuesday, 14 April 2008. I hope to be cleared to pump iron at that time. Doc expects it will be six months before I get my strength back.

I wont be able to box again until the steel is removed from my arm. We discussed having a surgery to remove the plates next year. All told it will be 18 months until I’m back to where I was.

I’ll be able to work the speed bag again - as soon as I can form a proper fist! I probably won’t be able to work the heavy bag until after the steel is removed; the risk of fracturing the bone around the plates is too great.

I generated a lot of force with my punch. My full routine, practiced three times a week, meant nearly an hour constantly pounding the bag with force. After 20 minutes or so I would usually generate a resonance that would shake the building with each blow (and send people running to see what was going on). It was excellent conditioning.

Now I am calm, but I am angry, frustrated, and disappointed too.
