Character name: Kasumi Goto
Fandom: Mass Effect 2
Timeline: After her loyalty mission and before the events leading up to the end of the game.
Age: Unknown, but she appears to be in her mid-20s at the least. (EDIT: apparently she was born in 2160, which makes her 25. My guessing prowess remains infallible!)
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Being from a video game set way into the future, Kasumi possesses abilities afforded to her by the advanced technology of her time in addition to her own personal abilities. These include:
✦ Activating a stealth cloak, effectively concealing her presence and movements. In combat, she uses this to sneak up behind enemies and strike them, and then uses it to sneak back into cover. Of course, she also uses this outside of combat during heists. That Kasumi is known as the galaxy's most enigmatic thief suggests that beyond her technical stealth capabilities, she knows how to move her body in a way that makes the least amount of noise possible.
✦ A skill called "Overload," which is comparable to causing something to short-circuit; in the Mass Effect universe, it is used to take down shields, against synthetic enemies like mechs, cause weapons to overheat, and for overloading on-board systems, effectively rendering the ship defunct (and possibly causing it to explode).
✦ Weapon-wise, she can also use heavy pistols, submachine guns, and flash bang grenades.
✦ Being a highly successful thief in a galaxy of ridiculously advanced technology also means Kasumi has a quick mind and is quite the technical expert, and she can hack, bypass circuit boards, and other such skills demanded by her profession. A notable example would be using a recording of someone's voice, resampling it to say the desired phrase should she encounter a voice-recognition security system.
How would they use their abilities?:
Kasumi doesn't use her abilities unless she absolutely needs to, or can see that there is something to gain from their use. She wouldn't try to hack into or overload things just because. But if she's curious enough, she might. She also might just use her stealth to creep on people once in a while (with player permission, of course!).
Appearance:
Not much is known to
Kasumi's appearance. The hood that she wears up all the time dramatically overshadows most of her face, typically, but practically speaking from what is sometimes seen of her face, her features are distinctively asian, especially so with her light skin color and dark, narrow eyes. To accentuate her heritage, she also wears lipstick in a way that is reminiscent of Japanese geisha, and heavy, dark eye makeup. She probably has black hair, judging from the color of her eyebrows, but no one knows for sure. She wears a skin-tight suit (usually in black, but after Shepard earns her loyalty she may dress in red for reasons that don't really add up. I mean, why would the most enigmatic thief in the galaxy wear the most eye-catching color?).
(EDIT: jk about the dark eyes. According to the in-game model for Kasumi, her eyes are actually a pretty light, yellowish color. It's just hard to see what with the hood and the shadows and all.)
Background:
Mass Effect 2 follows the continued story of Commander Shepard, who is now tasked with the job of saving the galaxy from a mysterious species called the Collectors, who have been abducting entire human colonies. As the actions of Shepard him/herself are completely dictated by the player's choices, thus changing what might happen throughout the game's major plot, this app will only focus on Kasumi's story. Essentially, before Shepard can hope to defeat the Collectors, the commander needs a team.
Kasumi is one such possible member of the team. Her reputation as the most enigmatic master thief in the galaxy had garnered her the attention of Cerberus, the organization funding/backing Shepard's mission. After noticing that Cerberus was trying to look for her, she trailed them instead to find out why, and learned that they were looking for people to join Shepard on an "important mission," and were offering a ridiculous amount of money for it. She agreed to join under the condition that they help her with only one very personal mission involving her old partner-in-crime/former lover, Keiji Okuda, whom she met when she was hired by an art collector to steal a painting, only to find it already stolen and consequently having to tackle the competitor-thief for the prize. The other thief was Keiji.
With the deal locked down, Kasumi proceeds to await Shepard on the space station known as the Citadel. Kasumi is prowling on the catwalks near Shepard's disembarkation point when he arrives, and she hacks into a nearby advertisement display and uses it to stream a video of her in an attempt to catch the commander's attention. Humorously enough, despite being a master thief, Kasumi isn't very subtle when trying to get Shepard's attention, especially if ignored. Once approached, she asks for a password, and regardless of whether or not it is given, Kasumi introduces herself to Shepard using the hacked display and tells the commander that she's a fan. When questioned about her knowledge of the mission, she says that she's shocked that Cerberus didn't come to find her sooner, then chalks it up to the fact that she's incredibly hard to find in the first place. And when Shepard asks why she chose to meet him in such a roundabout manner and wonders if she's in trouble, she simply states that she has a reputation as the best thief, and not the most famous, and that she needs to be careful if she wants to keep it that way. She also needed to make sure that Shepard, who in actuality had been declared dead two years before, was the real thing. Or, "legit," as she says. Kasumi then reveals the nature of the deal she struck with Cerberus upon Shepard's query: she needs the commander's help on a heist to recover Keiji's graybox (a neural implant that stores memories, information, codes, etc… also illegal in most places) from a wealthy criminal named Donovan Hock who had killed Keiji. The graybox not only contains Keiji's memories of his time with Kasumi, but crucial, potentially dangerous information that could spark an interstellar war if in the wrong hands. Unwilling to speak in any more detail in such a public venue, Kasumi shuts down the advertisement once she has Shepard's word that he'll help out, and then reveals herself to have been watching from the overhead catwalks the entire time. Saying that she'll tell Shepard more at a later time also because the commander looks silly talking to an advertisement, she playfully declares she'll be waiting on the Normandy, Shepard's ship, and proceeds to cloak herself while walking away.
When it comes time for the heist, Kasumi formulates a game plan: Kasumi and Shepard infiltrate Hock's swanky party, with Shepard assuming the identity of someone named Gunn, who supposedly founded a reputable band of mercenaries. Of course, Kasumi ensures the legitimacy of the fake identity, having gone so far as to create witnesses, fabricate papers, and "an article in Badass Weekly." Once in the party, they are to make their way to the Hock's vault door and re-arm themselves with their weapons and Shepard's armor, which Kasumi had stored within a statue they sent to Hock under the pretense of it being a party present. Then they crack the vault's security and "waltz in" and take back Keiji's graybox. Kasumi sarcastically remarks about the obviousness of her relationship with Keiji if Shepard suggests that he meant a lot to her if she's going to great lengths to get his graybox back.
Not everything goes as planned, but when does it ever? Hock turns Kasumi away at the door, suggesting that she looks suspicious. Which she does, but whatever. You would think that being a master thief, Kasumi would have invented another fake identity for herself and would dress less conspicuously , buuuut… Anyway. She seems surprised at this turn of events, considering that no one knows what Kasumi Goto looks like, but states that Hock is probably just watching his ass and can't blame him for doing so. This proves to be only a minor setback, as Kasumi instead cloaks herself and follows Shepard closely, communicating via radio. Once Shepard locates the vault door, Kasumi uncloaks herself and immediately discerns all of the security nuances on the vault door: password-protected voice lock, kinetic barrier, and DNA scanner--right down to the make and series of the system. When Shepard asks if it's getting through will be a problem, Kasumi implores the commander to remember who Shepard's talking to. She claims that Keiji could crack that kind of security system in his sleep, and since she's better than him… well.
In order to to crack the voice-lock, Kasumi has Shepard chat Hock up as she records his voice. Easy enough task, since Hock seems to enjoy talking about how awesome he is. They also need the password itself, which they find to be "Peruggia," (which Kasumi recognizes as the name of the man who stole the Mona Lisa) after bypassing the security room's door taking down the guards inside. Kasumi then resamples the audio recording of Hock's voice so that they have a clip of him saying "Peruggia." As for the kinetic barrier, Kasumi notices that the power cable runs underneath the floor, so she sets Shepard's omni-tool (think of it like a computer of sorts, but holographic-y and on your arm!) to detect electromagnetic fields. They eventually find the power source behind a screen, at which point Kasumi overloads it and thus removes the kinetic barrier. Then, to get a sample of Dock's DNA, they sneak into Hock's bedroom. Note that in the game, Shepard and Kasumi can either force their way in through the balcony, taking down some guards en route, or fool the lone guard stationed at the door by using a voice resampling of the security chief's voice that Kasumi had obtained from tapping into communications at the security room.
Once they have everything, they crack the security. Kasumi checks for and toys with the surveillance cameras in the elevator leading into the vault as Shepard gears back up. Once inside, they use a scanner to locate Keiji's graybox. Kasumi seems a little overwhelmed when they find it, but after taking down the security around it, she proceeds to download the graybox's contents into her omni-tool.
Unfortunately, however, the jig is up! Hock shows his giant face on a holographic screen and tells "Ms. Goto" not to bother with the graybox as it's code locked and that he had a feeling it was her at the door and knew that if it really was Kasumi Goto, that she would break in even though she was turned away. Hock then threatens to kill her to obtain the information inside her graybox and babbles on some more (Shepard can choose to shoot at one of the art pieces in Hock's vault to shut him up, which is highly recommended!). Outraged, Hock sends in the mercenaries he hired to eliminate Kasumi and Shepard.
That doesn't go quite well for them, of course. I mean, she's got Commander-freaking-Shepard with her, who is basically the galaxy's superhero. Anyways, the two are about to make their grand escape, when Hock graces them with his presence in a gunship before the Normandy's shuttle can arrive to extract them. Meanwhile, his mercs are still attacking them. Now all that proves to be a little more difficult to take down, but nothing they can't handle. As the battle wears on, Kasumi suggests that if she can get on a direct path to the gunship, she can take down its shields. So once Shepard's shot down a few more mercs to clear a path, Kasumi proceeds to sprint across the deck they're on, leap and swing onto some pipes and makes a run for the ship, mounting it in a most expert, swift and ninja-like fashion. Once on the gunship, Hock tries to shake her off (literally), but she overloads the gunship's shields and tauntingly glances into the windshield and salutes Hock as she leaps off of the gunship and back onto the deck. After that, she and Shepard take down the gunship and Hock's mercs with ease as the Normandy's shuttle arrives and they make their getaway.
En route back to the ship, Kasumi finally takes a look into Keiji's graybox. There, she encounters a projection of Keiji that he'd likely recorded in the event that he died. He explains that the data he managed to obtain was extremely dangerous and could make things worse for humans across the galaxy if the Council (basically, a political body comprised of and representing various species across the galaxy, of which humans had only recently been permitted to be involved) ever found out. However, he had encrypted the data, lacing it into his memories stored in the graybox, and uploaded the decryption key onto Kasumi's graybox so that no one could ever have the data without getting both their grayboxes. This, however, effectively makes Kasumi a target for anyone who's after that information. Knowing that Kasumi would want to hold onto his memories, Keiji adds that she doesn't need his neural implant to know that he'll always be with her and implores her to destroy the data--and his memories in the graybox--to escape this fate. Kasumi refuses to let go of all that's left of Keiji. He says his final goodbye and his final profession of love, and Kasumi embraces the projection of Keiji she sees before her. Shepard can then either A) allow her to keep the graybox but remind her that she'll have to face the consequences, or B) insist that she destroy it. For the sake of this app, I'll say that Shepard allowed her to keep it. She tells him that she's ready to face the consequences and that she'll stay off the grid and pretty much keep a profile so low it's like she doesn't exist. She thanks Shepard for his help, and the rest is history.
Personality:
Kasumi is very much a playful "genki girl" type character, and she's Japanese to boot! In combat, she'll slip a playful "haw-haw" at an enemy or say "a gift for you!" when throwing a flash bang grenade. She'll also sarcastically remark that it's like she's "invisible or something" if Shepard accidentally shoots her. It also seems that she has quite a sense of humor, which often shows itself in the form of sarcastic remarks. She's quite observant of people, and is the only other person aboard the Normandy apart from the yeoman aka on-board shrink who can pick up on certain things about some of the people on the ship. This leads into her being somewhat of a gossip. If Shepard talks to her on the ship, she'll often comment on other characters' demeanors, and possibly even their personal lives. She also seems to exhibit her more thief-like (or stalker-y) tendencies at times, insinuating that she spies on a squad member, Jacob, as he works out. That said, she's a bit curious about other people's lives, bordering on nosiness, but all in good nature. She's also quite compassionate, and harbors a genuine concern for people around her and for humans, judging by her eagerness to join Shepard's mission and the way she had saved a young girl from slavers.
Being the galaxy's most enigmatic master thief and a skilled hacker, Kasumi is also extremely intelligent. It is suggested, however, that despite being a thief, that Kasumi isn't actually… criminal, if that makes sense. Of course, she enjoys the thrill of the heist and the getaway, but she doesn't kidnap people, take hostages, etc. It also seems like her portfolio for stealing consists mainly of stealing information, artifacts, or pieces of art. Which, by the way, she appreciates greatly! Kasumi may live in a highly advanced, digitally-dependent time but she still enjoys the feel of paper between her fingers when she reads the classics, and knows a genuine piece of art when she sees it. That said, she's also a bit of a sentimental person and a romantic. When she was just starting out as a thief, she used to leave a single red rose in place of the items she would steal, and it wasn't until she met Keiji that she was made to realize that was kind of a dumb idea that was just for show. She also enjoys romance novels and crime novels, and files from an information broker suggest she also enjoys writing poetry… though the quality of her work might be questionable at best. And as expected as someone who makes a lifestyle out of stealing things, Kasumi can be quite a daredevil. She has a lot of confidence in her abilities, and isn't afraid to show them off. Once, she stole a piece of art from a high-security exhibit of artifacts from Earth, completely on a dare from Keiji.
Have you read up on how the game works?: The Guide plug-in for communication is called FlamingFerret, and characters can earn money on the ship by completing missions, doing freelance jobs, or living off of other people's money by way of mooching or stealing.
1st person sample:
You've got some interesting people on your ship, Shepard. Can I call you Shep? It's one syllable less, and kinda catchy too. Anyway, right, glad I joined. It's kind of annoying that a lot the stuff you've been doing for humans--hell, the galaxy--goes mostly unnoticed or unacknowledged, but eh. Can't have it all, I guess? Not that I really want to be all famous, anyway. I mean, once you've purged the galaxy of all evil or something superhero like that, Kasumi is "opening up shop" again. And it'll be troublesome if everyone suddenly knows who Kasumi Goto, master thief is and what she looks like. Maybe I should make some fake identity while I'm working here? Just for the outsiders, I mean.
Right, back to the point! Interesting people on your ship. That Jacob? Mm. Did he and Miranda have something going on in the past? I've noticed there's a teeny bit of awkwardness between them. Not that it's obvious, mind you. I just pick up on these things really quickly. Part of the job description, y'know?
3rd person sample:
The sound of light, barely-audible patter of feet, but nothing more. It eluded all but those with trained ears, but she was willing to bet that no one in the Combat Information Center (aka the CIC, or the bridge--that was a much shorter name that old "science fiction" novels used for these parts of a space vessel) could be classified as such. Shepard wasn't around, after all. EDI, the on-board AI, probably knew, but it was her very nature as an AI that deemed it unnecessary to declare something like "Ms. Goto is cloaking around the ship," or worse yet, "Ms. Goto is spying on people on the ship."
She had snuck onto this level of the ship by invisibly waiting around the elevator by the Crew Quarters until another crew member took the elevator up to the CIC. By some stroke of chance, it just so happened to be that one security crew member that she'd caught sizing her up when she first boarded the Normandy, and Kasumi found herself thankful that she decided to cloak through the CIC thereafter. Considering the alternative, which was being caught in acts of questionable sanity and non-creepiness, she knew that she would have adopted this practice regardless of whether or not there was an awkward crew member driving her into obscurity.
"No matter," she thought to herself. It was all worth it. The best part about taking risks was all the reward you reap from your success after doing so, after all.
Later that day, she fired up her omni-tool and recorded a video journal entry: "Peeked in on Jacob's routine workout again. I keep wondering why he always does it in the armory, where literally anyone can walk in and see? I mean, he's got nothing to hide, and it makes things... ahem, easier for me, but still. Kind of a random place to do sit-ups."
