So ... 'zines. You're probably wondering what the hell they are? Well ... so am I. LOL
No that would be ridiculous because then how could I possibly be working on one myself then, no? Well here's a clue for the uninitiated.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zine Too lazy to read that? Well let me cut it to the short and sweet. Its a homemade, cheap, hand made, cheap, independent of the major news media, cheap, magazine. But most importantly its cheap. LOL And in this day and age when breathing is something expensive I can assure that being cheap is super UBER important.
Neways, pretty much a zine is about anything you want it to be. From ranting, and bitching, to how-to-art or knit or whatever, or discussions about rock music and so on and so forth. Some are just comics, and some are just pictures that don't tell a narrative. The thing is they're small, they have a small circulation and they are super cheap to make. One individual person can make a 'zine and no one needs to be threatened by editorial dictates and such. Your opinion, in your book, with no one to tell you you're doing it wrong. Plain and simple. Good ole' American Freedom of Speech, with some good ole' school radicalism to it (or just plain goofery).
:D
Another reason 'zines are important is that they are the public's way of saying, "Take that you stupid b*tch ipad/nook/kindle!" Your reading materials should not be at the mercy of a power source. Books by themselves are a kind of illumination through the dark ages, I still remember the Bush years *cringes* and they're more apt to survive just about everything when tablets are at the mercy of your four year old. Yup. Well in truth, everything is at the mercy of your four year old, those babies are dangerous LOL
That said, I'm doing a 'zine. A cheap, photocopied thing, I'm still deciding on stapling or hand sewn binding or what. I will however need distribution outside of the United States. This is where my overseas friends come in. I'm hoping once I'm done, you'll let me mail you a few 5 or 6 copies, it really does depend on the postage ... and if you would be so kind you could distribute them to local 'zine fan shops. Usually these are leftist bookshops or old music stores that sell vinyl. But even so I can look this stuff up for you my distributing friends ... when the time comes. No use putting the horse before the cart. Obviously one copy will be for y'all to keep. :D Then if you like it, you might consider, I don't know ... submitting something to the next 'zine. Easy? Yes. Do you know why? Because all you do then is fold a normal sheet of paper in two and use it to write, draw or whatever on and then you send me that and voila all I have to do is staple it to the next 'zine I'm working on. And as simple as that you're a contributor to our fancy publication.
Maybe if you all grow to like it, you'll want to do 'zines of your own, and I can distribute them for you here in the states. I've already found a few bookstores that carry them and there's one here in our very own city as well.. All of which makes me very happy. But again, let us not get ahead of ourselves.
I will be keeping this as my private journal and I will soon be opening a new one strictly for the 'zine to let you all know how its coming along, etc. At the moment I have chosen a name for it, which is still secret :D and strictly on a need to know basis. The theme for my 'zine however eludes me, though I think I'll cover the art and writing scenes because that is where my interest lies.
Please feel free to drop any suggestions here in the comments, yeah, I'm thinking of writing a really short short for my 'zine, and I will totally draw pictures in it too. I'm hoping to make it kid friendly but we'll see how long I can go without cussing. Wish me luck ... Drop ideas and I'll be back soon hopeful with a new website and the beginning's of a 'zine.
The End.
