Title: Bee In Your Penny Loafers (Part 1 of ?)
Pairing: Leo/Hyuk (1950s meets modern times au where you can magically talk over club music)
Playlist: Gun - Nine Muses, Great Balls Of Fire - Jerry Lee Lewis
Delores scopes out the dance floor, taking in all the people and all the cracks of light from overhead squirming in-between them. She sees it, sees her, picking her out of the crowd because she has a aura that just screams the dance floor is not big enough for her and everyone else. A controlled rage harnessed and transformed into dancing, this girl wasn't here to party, she was here to take over the dance floor.
"Hold my drink." Dolores says shoving it at Kendra.
"Why?" Kendra asks confused but still taking it. Dolores doesn't reply because she's already slid off her barstool and is weaving her way through the jerking limbs on the dance floor toward the girl. She bumps into her casually, more of a brush actually, just to let her know she's there. The girl twists to look at her, she gives a toothless smirk and rolls her eyes. Dolores thinks she's an idiot because its just occurred to her that countless people have probably already tried this tactic to approach her. The girl turns away and keeps dancing. Dolores retreats.
"What the hell was that about." Kendra says handing Dolores her drink back.
"I'm a fucking idiot."
"I knew that."
Dolores punches Kendra's arm making her drink slop everywhere. "Hey watch it!" Kendra shouts.
Dolores looks back at the dance floor and sees some drunk harassing the girl. He whispers something in her ear and she shakes her head and tries to move, the man pursues. Now's her chance. She gives her drink to Kendra again and this time Kendra takes it without a word.
Dolores wades through the bodies of people again and taps the perpetrator on the shoulder. The second he turns Dolores grabs him by his tie and wraps it around her hand and tugs his head down. With her other hand she forces his chin up so he can look at her. "Will you please leave this fine specimen of a lady alone or do I have to tenderize your balls with my steel toed boots?" She asks.
"I wasn-" He starts but Dolores drops her had from his chin and tightens his tie so he chokes on his words. He nods his head frantically and Dolores lets him go. He skitters away into the dark.
"Thank's for that." Hyeeun says.
There's a pause.
"Can I get you a drink?" Delores blurts.
Real smooth Dolores real smooth.
"Aren't you going to ask my name first?" The girl asks leading Dolores toward the bar, not offended but a little shaken.
"I..." God dammit Delores. "That was my next question."
"It's Hyeeun."
"Hyeeun.." Delores repeats, looking her over in the better light by the bar. She's not your average beauty, with a wide face and high cheekbones and large features decorating it, an expressive, impactful face. "I'm Delores, but people call me all sorts of things."
"Like what?"
"Can't I buy you a drink first and then we'll talk?"
"If you insist."
Hyeeun orders a ginger ale which Dolores tells the bartender to add whisky to it, and a bronx bomber for herself since her drink left along with Kendra who probably went off too meetup with Robin. Delores leads them to a quieter corner where they sit.
"I've never seen you here before." Delores starts off, and she's not saying it to flirt, it's true, she hasn't.
"My eighteenth birthday was a few weeks ago," (Delores raises her eyebrow at this but then forces them it down immediately.) "and i was busy with school until then, my friends brought me with them today to see if it'd like it."
"Well? Do you?"
Hyeeun looks at her hard again. "I don't know yet."
So young, so stern, Delores loves it. The fight she's putting up to play hard to get but not shoving her away completely, mixed with the fear of drinking with a stranger in place she's never been before, it's adorable.
Hyeeun takes a sip of her drink, Delores can see the strain on her face as she swallows.
"You don't have to drink it, it's okay, I thought you didn't want to make me pay for a real drink, I'm sorry." Delores tells her, suddenly feeling like a criminal for forcing a drink on an underage girl. Hyeeun takes another small sip and then pushes the drink away.
They talk, Dolores gives her pointers on how to deal with drunks, and not to stay after her friends have left for christ sake and that Dolores thinks her dancing is spectacular. Hyeeun blushes is that and replies that she thinks Dolores is cool but a little scary.
"Would you like to hang out sometime?" Delores asks. She doesn't want to ask her out on an outright date, just take it slow.
"With you?" Hyeeun asks, quirking an eyebrow.
"Yeah, maybe the movies? Popcorn? That kind of thing."
Hyeeun thinks about it for a second, then musters all her remaining confidence and puts into her facial expression which kind of makes her look a bit angry and says, "My anime club meeting got canceled on friday so i'm free I guess."
___
Delores can't believe she's sitting outside of a high school on a friday afternoon of all things, waiting for Hyeeun to get out of class. It's hot and Dolores is sweating in her leather jacket but refuses to let herself take it off. She adjusts her bandana headband in her rearview mirror and fixes her lipstick and keeps reminding herself that Hyeeun's eighteen but it all still feels illegal to her. But when she sees Hyeeun in full sunlight looking prettier than the day itself, even if she was just wearing a red sweater, rolled up jeans and some oxfords, she couldn't care less.
"Hey Dolly," Hyeeun chirps bouncing into the passenger seat of Delores's convertible.
"Don't call me that." Delores quips, regretting it immediately after, because Dolly actually sounds pretty cute.
Hyeeun makes a face but doesn't push the matter further. "So what are we seeing?"
"Well... what sort of movies do you like? There's that new action flick the main's ugly though, some horror about a possessed girl who's kinda hot... the secret life of bears... One Direction This is us.."
"One Direction!!" Squeals Hyeeun. Delores forces herself not to roll her eyes.
Dolores likes One Direction, though no one knows this.
___
Dolores asks Hyeeun if she's hungry and since the movie won't start for a couple hours if she wants to go eat something. Hyeeun says yes. They eat mac and cheese at the diner down the street and Dolores asks more questions anime because she's just so perplexed by it ("People have cat ears???").
They leave for the movie and Hyeeun continues to jabber about her anime club (which she is the leader of apparently). They arrive at the drive-in. Dolores pulls into a spot and asks Hyeeun if she wants anything from the concession stand. She slides out of the car to get Hyeeun a corn dog, herself a cherry coke and a popcorn to share.
The movie starts, Hyeeun munches happily at her corn dog and sips Dolores's drink like it's hers. Dolores couldn't be more happy.
The movie continues, Dolores concludes that Hyeeun's a Niall stan and that Zayn is very hot, this is nothing surprising.
Dolores's and Hyeeun's hands reach for the popcorn at the same time, Dolores freezes but Hyeeun gives no reaction and grabs a handful from between Dolores's fingers. A piece of popcorn falls from Hyeeun's hand into the crack between her thigh and the seat as she draws it to her mouth. Without thinking Dolores leans in and fishes it out and pops it in her mouth, she can't have oil stains on her car seats after all.
Noticing a hole in Hyeeun's jeans, Dolores's hand wanders to Hyeeun's thigh. She plays with the frayed edges, twirling them around her fingers. Hyeeun give no response, spurred by curiously, Dolores gently pokes her finger against the small patch of exposed thigh. "Cute." She says quietly to herself, thinking about how Hyeeun probably tore it hopping over a fence or something. Hyeeun's eyes widen but she keeps them trained on the movie screen. Dolores retracts her hand. Hyeeun looks at her, opens her mouth to say something, closes it, and looks back at the screen.
Dolores doesn't want to rush things, she just wanted to touch, that's all.
___
Dolores pulls up in front of Hyeeun's house, mustering her courage she grabs Hyeeun's arm and writes her phone number on it with eyeliner. Hyeeun cackles and says that she had a pen and paper in her bag she could have used if she'd just asked. Hyeeun thanks her for the evening and bounces back out of the car.
"Hyeeun-ah!" Dolores shouts from the car just as Hyeeun's opening her front door. Hyeeun turns. "Actually... like the nickname Dolly."
Hyeeun giggles loudly and waves goodbye.
___
"Kongsuk..." Dolly says distraught sinking into the living room couch, "I'm in love with a child who's obsessed with some anime called Naruto something, and who treats me like her babysitter."
"I thought you liked kids unni." Kongsuk says through the open bathroom door, blowing cigarette smoke out the window whilst painting her nails on the sill.
"Kongsuk." Says Dolly firmly, glaring.
"Ok ok ok, how old is she?"
"18"
"Well at least she's legal." Says Kongsuk.
"Barely, she's so young I think she thinks I'm just being friendly."
"Well then be friendly," Kongsuk says simply, "she'll let you know what she wants if she wants anything." Kongsuk always has the best advice.
But...
"Maybe you should take your own advice and tell Nmi what you want." Dolores says winking.
Kongsook flings a nail clipper at her which she dodges easily.
"Well did you at least give her your number?" Kongsuk asks shuffling into the room her pink slippers to retrieve her nail clippers.
"I wrote it on her arm in eyeliner." Dolly says, is sounds way more embarrassing when you say it out loud oh god.
"What is this some kind of fifty-cent teen movie??" Kongsuk flings her arm into the air as if to ask god to spare her from such clichés.
"I know, I know! I thought it would be cool but she thought it was dumb and it was I'm a disaster." Dolores says putting her head in her hands.
"Just be you, that's cool enough." Kongsuk says suddenly getting all sentimental which weirds Dolly out.
"Oooh kay buddy whatever you say." Dolly pats Kongsuk on the shoulder and picks herself up and heads to her room. "Hey, maybe you should show Nmi you new lingerie I'm sure she'd think that's cool." Dolly adds, sticking her head out of the doorway to her room.
The nail clipper goes whizzing past her head and hits the doorframe.
Dolly closes her door laughing and then stops when she remembers a paper she has to write and starts begrudgingly on it. She glances at her phone for the rest of the night hoping stupidly for a "I had a fun time tonight." call that never comes.
