Now you know I'm not a parent so have no clue about kids. . .but I'm curious as why you're keeping them out of the gifted programs? is the pressure from teachers? other kids? or do the girls themselves feel stressed out by schoolwork? I was totally bored in many of my classes and I know the one six week I was in a 'regular' english class in highschool was a real eye opener for me. Dunno about gifted programs in younger grades but I never felt any extra pressure except from myself but that is the case in everything; my personal expectations are higher than any teacher ever expected. If the kid is putting pressue on themselves there's really nothing anyone else can do to make it easier (maybe I needed therapy but who knows!) I see that behavior in one of my nephews who, like me, would rather not turn stuff in or turn it in late if "it's not good enough" even though he gets A's on everything. Gifted kids need to be challenged and at least around here, the teachers in those classes are usually top notch plus they often do not have

First of all, the Gifted program here is total bullshit. Its one hour a day, three days a week. And they only subject covered is Spelling. They would have to maintain their regular class spelling lists of 20+ words and the 20+ vocab words weekly AND the 30-40 'quest' words. I'm not saying that they couldnt do it because I know they can but all this spelling would be in addition to the Language Arts/English, History/Social Studies, Science, Health & Math daily homework assignments thay they have, not to mention the weekly projects due every friday and the DAILY library books they have to read. (At least one new book every day and they are tested on them DAILY) Lets keep in mind that they are just children.. they are only 8 & 7. Kayla has been recently diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and stress can and does exacerbate her problem. Kacie also has a very nervous stomach. She had perfect attendence for the year (Which if ya know how often we get sick in this house you would understand what an accomplishment that was) until the Quest (

I can't believe how big your girls are... Of course, Seth is now as tall as his grandfather, so I should be aware of these changes, huh? ;)
Starting school in July is ridiculous. Y'all's school district just might as well go to a year-round schedule and have all the mini-breaks during the year.
Like Din said, I think G/T programs can be great. In this podunk town, the G/T programs were shit, and Aimee and Sassy really should've had better than they got. At least by the time they got to high school, they could take AP classes and college credit classes...
Yeah, we basically are on a year round schdeule. We get ALOT of time off during the year. A week in October, November, February & April not to mention something like 20 days at christmas and all the other various holidays.
The Gifted program here sucks ass too. When I was a kid, we didnt call it "giften" or Quest.. we called it Enrichment and you didnt go for an hour a day a few days a week.. you went to a whole new school or at the very least a whole new classroom all day every day with all the other smart kids.
Once I get back from Wake Forest and get some time to breathe, I'll send 'em your way. :o) They turned out pretty good, well, at least they looked like they did based on what I saw on the little camera screen. ;o)
I am so proud of the girls! They have done just so very well!
