I'm a member of a livejournal feminist community, and someone posted an article about Hillary Clinton. Apparently everyone thinks she's brilliant because she rode the fence by saying that whether it's right or wrong, why don't pro and anti choicers just be glad the number of abortions has gone down dramatically and work together to make sure that ( Read more... )

I am in agreement with your opinion. It's rather pompous for someone supposedly open-minded to say such things as the person with an opposing position does not have the right to feel that way. Something I guess I can relate to personally is the fact that I'm gay and have been alienated from most mainstream conservative Christians, but I don't go around saying ALL Christians are a-holes. I have many wonderful friends, who are open-minded and Christians at the same time. While I think it's sad that some people will continue to show complete hatred towards gays and those who support pro-choice for women, I realize that is their opinion and have just as much right to it, even if I may not agree with that stance.

Exactly, as long as they don't act on it and do something hateful toward you--or any gay person--it's like whatever, it's your thought. If you think it's wrong, that's your opinion. Just don't enforce it on me by saying I can't marry my partner b/c it makes YOU uncomfortable. THAT'S when it becomes an issue, not when it's just their opinion.

Yes! I'm so glad to see someone else feel the same way. I'm pro-choice, but I'm uncomfortable with pro-choice people looking down at pro-lifers. I think it's an incredibly emotional and personal issue, and no viewpoint is wrong. I don't think anti abortion equals sexist. I think pro-lifers honestly believe that they're saving a life. I really do think you can be feminist and anti abortion.

I think that if everyone just minded their own business a little more and stopped worrying about what everyone else was doing a little less, we would all be a lot better off.

But what I was saying is, if someone is pro-life in that they think the fetus is a valuable life, should that thought be so viciously criticized? Their taking ACTION on that thought and trying to prohibit anyone else from being able to is a different story. But like my mom for instance, she's pro-life but she wants abortion to be legal. Why? Because she knows they will get it done anyway and she'd rather it be done safely. So I don't know why anyone would yell in her face about how stupid it is that she thinks of a fetus as a life if she's not doing anything about it to restrict someone else's choice in the matter. See what I'm saying? I tried to emphasize that it's the judgment of people's opinions so harshly that I don't agree with...when they take action against it that inflicts on someone else's freedom, THAT'S when it's a problem. I don't care what anyone thinks about it as long as they don't try to interfere in my right to choose.

I love that your mom can have her beliefs and still respect those of others. In my experience, I've only known pro-life people to impose their views on everyone. If you aren't telling me what to do with my body, you can think whatever you want to think. It's when someone tells me that I CANNOT have an abortion because THEY think it's wrong that I put up a fight and start slinging the mud.
