I hear you on your dinner party experience. I just had a conversation about politics, and found myself going with my typical canned response. I had to back track too, and realized my old way of looking at it is so outdated; akin to that 'ah-ha' moment you had with the hole you dug. It just snaps your head around so fast you feel like a moron.
They may be racing out ahead of me, but I'm on their heels!

What surprises me more is that there are lots of people in the world who feel no such compulsion to improve at all, who are content to stop learning anything after whatever terminal level of education they received, to stick with the canned political responses for the rest of their lives, and to keep simply muddling through with no variation and no questions. I simply cannot understand that -- but there are a lot of things I don't understand about people, so I guess that fits the pattern.
