so, this is a pretty morbid example, but:

a family member is drowning. you [not you] haven't spoken a kind word to him [suppose it's a him] in years.

you save him.
seems heroic.
but you only saved him because he was rich and wrote you out of his will, and you needed him to change it.

i don't know if you're aware of this, but the nonexistence of selflessness has been debated in about a million college philosophy classes.

mr. quick talked briefly about selflessness to us, so i bet he got it from his college philo classes. but, it is interesting to think about. . .
