Summer's End

Aimless. Ya know, I think that word would describe me lately. I'm sorta in limbo. Waitin' to find out if I'm gonna have a job when the high school starts up again. Waitin' for Taffy to come back and to decide if she's gonna forgive me and Jor for the stuff with Heather. Waitin' for Maddie to get sent back. Makes me all out of sorts

I feel her before I see her. Maddie, walkin' up behind me. Probably barefoot; she don't seem to like shoes too much. I glance at her, quickly, then back at the sky. "Hey," I say. "Haven't seen too much of you lately."

"I kinda noticed," I say, my voice soft too. The theme for the night seems to be hushed. "You haven't been around much at all." Silence fills in the space in between, and finally I ask, "Anything you wanna talk about, or would you rather just sit?"

"I'll miss you too," I say.

A cloud moves over the moon, darkening everything. In the dim light that's left I shift positions, stretchin' out in the grass propped on one elbow. What else can I really say? I'm glad I got to meet her, but I dunno how to mention that without makin' things more depressing than they are already.

I'm a little puzzled. "You told me there was some kid who could see you before you got zapped here, didn't you?" She hasn't been around me enough to be talkin' about me, or Jor either, I don't think. I'm tryin' to put two and two together and prob'ly comin' up with six, but I ask, "Is that who you've been hangin' out with when you aren't here?"
