Girls go out in DROVES to see movies like this...see The Notebook (81 million at the box office, 29 mil budget), Steel Magnolias (85 million box office), A Walk to Remember (41 million box office on an 11.8 million budget). That's just on Box Office, the home video and TV rights could possibly double those numbers. You also have to remember, that if a movie triples it's budget at the box office it's a HUGE success. So, as long as girls go out (and drag boyfriends) to movies like that, they will continue to get made.

i know all that but i just don't understand why people would want to put themselves through the emotional turmoil. also, someone, somewhere had to decide to make a really sad movie first in order to discover the female turnout. so as long as people are making sad movies, girls will go see them. that's the order in which i see it.
