Build up your friends list so people notice you're there and can give you access to their locked content.

Go to people's own lj thingies and click the "add as a friend" stuff. They will then notice they have been added (eventually, probably) and if they want they will add you back. Then you can go to one page - your Friends page - and see a list of all entries in date order instead of having to go to each individual journal. That by itself is handy, but, more importantly, if they have locked some of their entries to "friends only" (which people do so they know who is reading their stuff) then you will see them if you're logged in.
