GEEKS ON THE BEACH
Colonel John Sheppard absently tapped the jumper's control stick, his patience wearing thin. He swiveled around to face Teyla, who appeared to be meditating. The fact that she appeared so calm unnerved him more.
"Are you certain McKay said he would be right behind you?"
Teyla slowly opened her eyes, gazing at Sheppard from beneath her lashes, "I believe that is the fourth time you have asked me that question since I arrived. Yes, Rodney said they would be along shortly."
Ronon leaned back, crossing his arms over his chest and muttered, "Should've told him no."
Sheppard frowned, "Yeah...I should have, but they've been cooped up for nearly a month after contracting that alien bug. Carson thought it would be a good idea if they got some fresh air and a change of scenery. I agreed with Carson but I tell you, if he doesn't show up in a few minutes, I'm leaving his ass."
After another five minutes passed, Sheppard quietly said, "That's it." With a quick thought, he powered up the jumper and began to raise the ramp.
"Wait…wait…dammit, we're here!" Rodney's high-pitched voice floated above the ramp's thrum.
Sheppard sucked in a deep breath and dropped the ramp, "It's about damn time." He spun around in time to see McKay, Zelenka, Dr. Neal Franklin, and Dr. Robert Davis, followed by Carson Beckett, entering the jumper, carrying all kinds of equipment. They had chairs, coolers, beach umbrellas, what appeared to be deflated beach balls, along with their computer packs. Standing up, Sheppard remained silent until the five people had stowed their gear and sat down on the benches in the rear compartment.
"Are you done?"
McKay pursed his lips, then sneered, "You were going to leave us."
"You were late. And what the hell is all of this…this…stuff?"
"We are spending the day at the beach; we need stuff. You just drop us off, and go do your little meeting thing, then come get us. That's all you have to do." McKay huffed and plopped down in the copilot's seat. "Well, come on, Sheppard, let's go."
The colonel fumed for a second, then following McKay's lead, plopped down in his seat. Within seconds, the jumper lowered into the gate room and through the event horizon.
They emerged from the stargate into paradise; the gate rested on a vast, lush lawn, surrounded by palm trees and bright-colored flowers, all swaying in a gentle breeze. To the west, the main settlement's whitewashed building stood starkly against a cornflower blue sky. To the east, a broad pristine white-sand beach swept toward the azure water of the ocean, glinting in the sunlight. Sheppard banked the jumper toward the beach, landing gently on the fine white sand.
"Okay…out," he ordered, and McKay and the others gathered their gear and hurriedly escaped the grumpy colonel. Sheppard quickly took off and headed for the settlement and their meeting with the governing council. Four hours later, treaty in hand, they returned to the beach.
Sheppard slipped the jumper into stealth mode and flew over the beach; greeted by a site that prompted laughter from the trio onboard. Zelenka and Franklin had set up an enormous chess set on the sand; images of chess pieces adorned flat discs serving as game pieces, and the scientists appeared engrossed in their game. Two colorful beach umbrellas were sticking in the sand, Beckett under one and McKay the other. Dr. Davis glistened in the sun, slathered in suntan oil, stretched out on another beach chair.
Landing the cloaked jumper, Sheppard turned to Teyla, "You did bring our swim suits and stuff."
She grinned, "Yes...I did, and your 'boogie board' is tucked in the storage locker. I also packed more food and beer."
"It's a good thing that the citizens of this planet are so gracious and offered us the use of this beach whenever we want. I think this planet is going to become a favorite of ours."
"It is certainly more beautiful than the rocky beaches on New Lantia," Teyla replied as she handed Sheppard his bag. "You two change clothes while I wait in the cockpit, then after you leave I will change." Minutes later, Sheppard and Ronon emerged, clad in bathing suits, carrying their gear, and waited outside the jumper for Teyla.
Peering through the palms at the scientists, Ronon asked, "What is that white stuff on their noses?"
Sheppard laughed and motioned for them to move, as Teyla joined them, "That is zinc oxide; geeks use it to keep from burning their noses. Come on; let's join our geeks on the beach, time to play tourist."
