Part 1, Reflection: Thinking about literature, and having read Larkin's "This Be the Verse," do you think the poem fits some criteria for "great literature"? For example, do you think Larkin is dealing with a universal theme?

I agree that parents mold their children for the bad as well as the good. I also think that it is true that many will find some sort of connection with this poem.
I like how you said that "Simple Recipes" shows each family members experience within the family. I had not really noticed that till you pointed it out.

A friend of mine has an expression: "it's always more complicated." I think that's a good thing to remember when reading "Simple Recipes" or anything for that matter. You've got the main ideas, but it's always a good idea to explore the complexity of a piece of work. Remember how in the discussion we said that literature is more complex :-)

I like you said,"But just as we are moulded by our parents". This let me think about my characters and my parents'. Yes, we are moulded by our parents. Unfortunately, we will mould our children although we already know this.
