I guess author picking will depend a lot on who the students are, but if you can work Francesca Lia Block in, I think all students would benefit. She has a way of writing that encourages the inclusion of all the senses in your writing, and I don't think people realize how much of writing is usually limited to visual descriptions. Just a suggestion.

You know, I've never read anything by Francesca Lia Block. I'm not familiar with her style; but I'm working a lot with sensory details, so what you mentioned sounds really good. Is there anything specific you recommend I check out?
