IT support - help needed

We gave our work cleaner one of the old laptops as his had been burned in a fire -

He has AOL and has installed the disk - but when he plugs it into the phone line it doesn't read it and won't connect to the net.

I have no more infor than that - any thoughts?

Modem driver not installed or disabled? Was the laptop every used with a modem line before?

Yes, it has been used with phone line before and modem has worked.

Our IT guy set it up to be used on dial-up or home broadband.

Additional complication - the IT guy who set it up is on hols.

Plus, the machine isn't here with me so i can't physically look at it.
