I wanted to be a sound engineer at 16, and was sent to the local Center Parcs to have a go. They put me in the theatre, where there would be the chance to work with the sound engineer during performances. I spent approx. 1 hour during the whole week at the sound desk. The rest of the time they dressed me up as a badger/squirrel and had me walk around the complex and wave manically at children :)
Rest assured I gave up on that career path!

I couldn't choose between psychology and economics at A-level so I did my work experience for the Birmingham economics department. I'm now a psychologist. Guess how well that one went ;)

I also worked for a webpage design company. While I was there I wrote pages that were sold to the client for over £3,000 and didn't see a penny of it. I did however get a job offer good for right then or whenever I left school. Given the way the webpage industry went since then I maintain that I chose wisely. Still, I could've had a good summer job if I'd wanted it.

Both were handy for my CV for a while, though work experience is far enough in the past to not be worth much anymore.

First work experience was in a (separate) sixth form college library, I was already volunteering in the school library so I suppose they thought it would be appropriate. That was quite fun though a little daunting as I was only year 10 s all the borrowers were two years older than me. May well have helped me get my part time job which led directly to my current full time job ( ... )
