The Bible is a tool. God put truth within it, but it is not all truth. It isn't God. The Bible is important for understanding God, as he seems to of made it that way, but if someone never sees a Bible God can still reach them.
I don't know if you meant the Bible -has- to be read in a small group setting as much as it is read personally, but I don't think so. I think it's good, especially for discussion, but certainly isn't essential. I think it depends on the person, the group, and what the Holy Spirit is leading them to do.
I avoid any kind of view of the Bible accept as a helpful tool (with God's inspired words, of course.) Any other view makes it easy to judge others for not reading enough, or not being interested enough.
yeah. i didn't mean "has" to be read in a group. i just like the idea behind all the rabbinic writings on the torah. how so much truth was also in these ongoing discussions about the text. and much of that was worked out in a group setting.
this whole idea came up because i've been feeling crappy for not reading my bible, again. but then i realized that i've gotten to know God more lately, and it hasn't been by learning "about" Him. i'm becoming more thankful every day that God interrupted my plans of going to "bible" school right now...
i'm not sure that i can totally relate to this analogy. and i don't believe that the bible and the holy spirit are the only sources of truth. however i do believe that it is necessary to use descernment, another tool, in establishing truth.
i love how you said "god wants a relationship with us"
i've started realizing recently how true that statement is. god wants to love us. he created us to love us, not just that we would love him. this very idea has altered my way of thinking. and i love it.

but then I changed my mind.
but know, I agree with you about the bible not being the ONLY absolute truth.
