A Meme and an Unladylike Beginning

Because I can't resist, after seeing this meme all over the internet today...

The Meme:
1. Go to page 77 (or 7th) of your current ms
2. Go to line 7
3. Copy down the next 7 lines - sentences or paragraphs - and post them as they’re written. No cheating.

So here's mine, from page 7 of the (unrevised, first-draft) WIP currently known as Antonia O'Toole Takes the Low Road to Hollywood:

I swallowed hard. My heart was banging like a drum set. Darn it! I’d listened to too many of Daddy’s ghost stories. At night sometimes, after the last performances were done, he liked to spin tales about his gran who saw spirits and witches and ghouls back in Ireland. The little ones lapped them all up just like ice cream, but I’d never believed them for a moment.

There were no such things as ghosts or magic...

Poor Antonia. She has a lot to learn!

And since Wilful Impropriety, the YA Victorian-romance anthology, is out now in the UK - hooray! - here's a second excerpt...

My story in Wilful Impropriety is called "The Unladylike Education of Agatha Tremain", and this is the opening:

At the age of sixteen, Agatha Tremain let down her skirts, pinned up her hair, and set herself to running her father’s household. Her first step was to forge her father’s signature and dismiss her hated governess. Miss Blenheim left with her perfectly straight nose held high in the air, trailing bitter premonitions of disaster like wriggling serpents in her wake.

Agatha’s second step was to teach herself magic, using the books in her father’s library as her guides...

If you want to read the rest of the story, you can buy Wilful Impropriety from any UK store as either a paperback or an ebook. Or, if you're in the US, you can pre-order it from IndieBound or any other US bookstore! The blurb on IndieBound says:

The Season has finally arrived, filled with the magnificent balls, scandalous gossip, and clandestine romances that every lord and lady in good society has come to expect. But far within the walls of lavish estates and in the dark corners of the city lies a world that the aristocracy dares not touch, with rules and risks that glamour cannot overpower. Yet true love has no boundaries, and heiresses and street thieves alike must use their savvy and strength to create new beginnings and happily-ever-afters. Sometimes luck is enough, but every once in a while, a touch of magic may be needed.

Deliciously alluring, these thirteen historical romances from a talented array of YA authors will make even the most cynical heart swoon.

Happy Friday, everybody!
