Do you think "no problem" as a response to "thank you" is rude?

CRAZY!

I never, ever EVER say "no problem" and then today I totally said it to someone when they said "thank you" and I thought "Was that appropriate?"

TWINS!

haha, no i say it all the time and i've read about it TWICE while reading the paper recently.. that it's bad manners and that "you're welcome" is becoming obsolete for the ruder "no problem" response.

i neeeever thought of no problem as being rude! i guess i should stop saying it...

I say it all the time. It never seems to bug people when I tell them it is "no problem".

me too!

i say it all day everyday to my customers on the phone.. i never thought twice about it but i read in the paper that people think it's really rude. it's not like i'm saying "fuck you!" or anything!

Well yeah, it seems when customer call in with a "problem" or question you are having, after you help them find their solution or get them the information they need, they said "thank you" out of courtesy of the time it took you to give them that information. "No problem" just seems like an appropriate response. Maybe saying "no problem" is too casual?

i read a while ago i think some "dear abbey"-esque column where some lady was talking about how she HATES when people say "no problem" cuz it's so rude.

i don't get it!

i'm pretty sure the reason she thought it was rude was that she was saying something about how saying "no problem" implies that for you to do whatever they were thanking you for really WAS a problem and you're really saying "i don't mind about the problem you just caused me." or something like that.

i dunno. i say it all the time.

OOH - i found what i read:
Dear Prudence ( ... )

And to say we're "linguistic sheep" because use terms in their modern meaning is quite rude as well. If I'm a linguistic sheep then old Prudie is a vernacular tight wad.

yeah - it's weird. i used to really like that column because she seemed to have a lot of the same opinions as i. but i was not pleased with that one.

she has since been replaced.

Nope. You're telling the person it wasn't a problem. Almost as to say, "no need to thank me, it wasn't a problem."

yea. i say it ALL the time. we didn't look for each other at brand new! we suck.
