Over the last few days Pumpkin’s mobility has decreased again, and tonight he’s in pretty bad shape.
Today he’s reached the point where he can barely move. I’ve tried picking him up and placing him on his feet, as in the past he’s been able to wobble off, but not today. We found him stranded several times today in places where he’d obviously just run out of steam. We’ve been carrying him about a fair bit.
I’m most concerned though that tonight for the first time he seems to have lost his appetite. I offered him food I know he still likes (perhaps grimly it’s “Chicken with Pumpkin”) and while he showed a faint interest in the distinctive clatter of plate on tiles he gave up pretty quickly when he tried to drag himself into the kitchen. I picked him up and placed him next to his food and he barely gave it a sniff. He showed no interest in water. With a lot of encouragement he licked a few fingertips’ worth of yoghurt, which normally he loves to distraction.
He has not purred once today :-(
Husband took him to the tray earlier today and he didn’t do anything except throw up, also not a good sign. He did poo at some point because we’ve had to clean him up, and it looks more pale and runny than it’s been. Both of these do not bode well for the health of his liver.
He’s clearly tired and depressed. Not distressed, and certainly not suffering per se, but he’s definitely on the first rung of that ladder.
My immediate decision is whether or not to give him tonight’s steroids on an empty stomach. I’ll try him on cheese later to see if he’ll eat that. He’s never refused cheese before. When he came to us as a kitten the breeder told us he loved cheese, so it’s a taste he acquired young.
I shall talk to the vet tomorrow.
ETA: He didn't want the cheese, and we've had to help him do things no cat (or person) really wants help to do. He's moved from depressed to distressed. Tomorrow will most likely be the day we say goodbye to our little man.
