Cally latest

Cally has been showing her age of 20 years in the last few months. She hasn’t had much airtime because of Pumpkin’s situation, but I’ve been quietly concerned about her and now it’s gone up another notch.

A couple of months ago she was excused from her flu shot because she was battling an infected bite at the base of her tail (thanks a bunch Princess). It took a couple of courses of antibiotics but we thought we had it defeated. She would have gone on without the flu shot since her chances of infection were slim, but because we’re bringing two kittens into the household in a few weeks time the vet recommended she get her shot, and Cally seemed well enough for it. Creaky with arthritis, yes. A bit discombobulated by the disappearance of Pumpkin, yes. But well enough for the shot.

We may have been wrong about that.

Since the flu shot on Monday she’s looked pretty seedy which I thought might pass, but she started having trouble at the old wound site. Sitting and getting comfortable has become problematic, and I don’t like the way she’s been trembling. Her breathing is sometimes quite alarming, and she hasn’t been sleeping on the bed for a couple of days which is unusual. I don’t know what qualifies as a normal cat pulse, but the fur at her throat seems to be jumping at greater speed than instinct would prefer. I suppose the shot may have weakened her resistance to that infection that never entirely went away.

She already had an appointment for Monday for her next Cartophen shot, but last night I realised she probably needed more antibiotics sooner rather than later, and I was fortunate to get an appointment for later this morning. Looks like the poor kitty is going to score three injections in the same week :-(

Oh dear, just now she stumbled while trying to curl up.

We leave in a week and have a cat-sitter scheduled, but I’m wondering if it might be wiser to leave Cally with the vet for the week we’re away. Normally she’d be able to last the distance without supplementary medication, but now I’m not so sure. If she does need a second antibiotic shot that will fall due while we’re away. I think I just answered my own question. Oh kitty, I’m sorry. On the bright side she has short fur and I won’t be trimming her arse any time soon.

I wonder how Princess will feel being the only cat in the house for a while? Buffy’s homecoming is fixed, but maybe we’ll defer the introduction of the second and more health-risky Cat Haven kitten for a bit.

ETA: Back from the vet who pronounced my poor kitty Very Sore Indeed. They don't do boarding any more, but will take Cally under medical supervision while we're away so that's a relief.
