bottom of the second: the cards should never throw the sox lineup another slider again, ever. thus far, the sox have hit two singles (one nearly a home run) and two doubles off the slider.

I think taking him out was a bad idea. Varitek isn't a better hitter at this point, esp. since Mirabelli's feeling it. (Although I love Varitek.)
